Southside Behavioral Health Celebrates Mental Health Month

BRUNSWICK, MECKLENBURG, & HALIFAX, VIRGINIA – The month of May is observed as Mental Health Awareness Month. All month, mental health advocates, organizations, survivors, community members, and Southside Behavioral Health will work to increase awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues within our local communities.

“Mental health awareness is the recognition that our inner thoughts are an important part of our overall health and wellbeing,” said Southside Behavioral Health Prevention Manager Kenan Tyner-Smith.

All month, Southside Behavioral Health, in partnership with other organizations and community members, will be offering free yard signs for individuals and local businesses to display. The goal of this campaign is to promote healing within our own communities, educate local community members about different aspects of mental health and increase conversations around mental health topics.

Visit our website at https://southsidebh.org/mhm-2022/ to request your FREE yard sign. Once you receive your sign, put it up in your yard or driveway and post a picture to our Facebook page @southsidebehaviroalhealth with the hashtags #mentalhealthmonth #southsidestrong #MHMSBH to enter to win the Mental Health Month Sweepstakes.

“Asking saves lives. We hope our campaign will increase awareness in our local communities,” said Tyner-Smith.

Additionally, Southside Behavioral Health and the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services would like to invite all community members to attend a FREE two-day virtual conference, discussing the importance of trauma-informed care and community action. Featuring keynote speaker Dr. Bruce Perry, the Building Trauma Responsive Communities Conference begins May 12 and ends at 3 PM on May 13, 2022.
