This exempt (FLSA) position’s incumbent is responsible for the psychiatric evaluation and management of individuals with behavioral health and/or co-occurring substance use disorder.


Completes comprehensive evaluations of individuals to determine current mental status, diagnoses, medical comorbidity, and treatment needs.. Responsible for reviewing the documentation of the nurses, clinical staff and outside records for a comprehensive evaluation and discussing cases with SBH staff as needed to determine the medication and other treatment needs of individuals receiving services. Prescribes and orders medication per VA Board of Pharmacy regulations and best practice standards. Maintains required documentation and medical records per state and federal guidelines and SBH policy and procedure.  Reviews individuals’ medical profiles in EHR and reconciles medication list as needed.  Participates in interdisciplinary staff meetings and coordinates with other SBH staff and with other medical providers such as primary care physicians.  Counsels individuals and/or family members concerning appropriate use, anticipated effects, adverse reactions, and side effects of psychotropic medications. Provides individual and family education on Body Mass Index (BMI) and metabolic syndrome and provides referrals for additional management as needed. Orders and reviews lab results and urine drug screens. Consults with the SBH Medical Director as needed to prescribe appropriate medications and staff cases. 


Master’s degree in Nursing from an Accredited School of Nursing. Nurse Practitioner licensed in VA to practice medicine and certification as a psychiatric nurse practitioner required. Buprenorphine waiver preferred. Must meet all criminal background and drug screening requirements.  Must possess a valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
